A year after Brian McCann led the NL to victory and won All-Star game MVP, three Braves hurlers helped hold the AL in check in another National League win.
Five Braves were named to the All-Star team but Chipper Jones was unable to play when he went on the disabled list this past Saturday.
Brian McCann got the start behind the plate for the NL but went 0-2 in his at-bats. He caught both Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee but was taken out of the game before any Braves pitchers entered.
The American League jumped out to an early lead after Adrian Gonzalez took Lee deep in the fourth inning. After giving up more hits, Lee was pulled in favor of Tyler Clippard. Clippard allowed a hit to the only batter he faced by McCann tagged out Jose Bautista at the plate on a good throw from Hunter Pence.
The NL quickly took the lead in the bottom of the inning when Prince Fielder blasted a three run homerun off C.J. Wilson.
Jair Jurrjens entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and struck out one batter before being relieved by Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel walked a batter before getting out of the inning.
Jonny Venters entered the game in the eighth, giving the Braves three straight pitchers on the NL side. Venters faced just two batters, striking out one before exiting the game.
The National League won the game 5-1 after Brian Wilson recorded the last two outs. Clippard got the win despite allowing a hit to the only batter he faced and Brian Wilson recorded the save. C.J. Wilson got the loss for the American League, which managed just six hits in the game (three of which were allowed by Cliff Lee).
Fielder was given the MVP award but the pitching staff as a whole was just as crucial to the win. Braves pitchers provided 2.2 innings of scoreless work in the game and helped secure a National League win for the second year in a row.
Jair Jurrjens is scheduled to pitch for the Braves again on Saturday, but could switch spots with Tommy Hanson (who should have been at the All-Star game) if the Braves decide he needs an extra day of rest.
